Bay Area’s Blue Bottle Coffee Will Eliminate Paper and Plastic Cups in Some Cafés

It’s a first step toward zero waste by end of this year.

A new sustainability policy may be coming to your local Blue Bottle café in the near future. In putting an end to paper and plastic cups at the popular coffee joint, customers will be asked to bring their own vessel for their favorite cup of Blue Bottle’s coffee.

According to SF Gate, “CEO Bryan Meehan issued a statement declaring all of their nearly 70 cafés in the United States could be zero waste by the end of 2020, following a pilot program of two zero-single-use-cup cafés at undisclosed locations in the Bay Area.

“Though Meehan admitted the change would ‘wreak havoc on every aspect’ of his company’s operations, he acknowledged the staggering impact of their disposable cups: Each Blue Bottle location, Meehan estimates, goes through 15,000 single-use cups per month, or 12 million per year in total.

“We’re not afraid to admit that we’re part of the problem,” he said.
