Monday Moods: “Might Be Right”

Level up your Monday with a new batch of tracks from emerging California artists.

Whether you’re the kind of person who spends their holiday weekend active and outdoors, or the type to stay inside and keep it mellow, “Might Be Right” is the type of Monday Mood that will effortlessly fit into any scenario. The common thread? That you’re getting a high dose of Vitamin C—that’s “C” for California, of course—delivered straight to your eardrums.

Born and raised outside of Philly and currently based in LA, Nicky Egan has performed all over the country fronting her own musical projects and performing as a hired-gun for Chicano Batman, Tune-Yards, Carla Morrison and Turkuaz, among others. Her debut album, This Life, drops this week via Transistor Sound/Colemine Records, so we had to drop the title track into this week’s 5-pack.

Also dropping on June 3 is Truth or Consequences, the debut album from LA artist Chelsea Rose. A sophisticated pop record with a timeless sound touching on bossa nova, jazz, and ’60s pop—with deep lyrical introspection reminiscent of the classic ’70s singer-songwriter canon—Truth or Consequences is also the first artist full-length from fledgling label Paul Is Dead Records, a small-run, independent label based out of LA, NYC and Wisconsin.

Next up is another track from an all-female band that is slowly becoming a new favorite: MUNA. Says Katie Gavin of the group’s latest single, “This song is the album’s country moment, and in some ways we feel it is the heart of the record. This song explores the power of language and the words we use to describe who we are and who we want to be. Even though it is a happy, hopeful song, I shed the most tears of the record in the vocal booth recording this chorus. I think there’s something very vulnerable about plainly expressing my desire to be kinder to myself and comfortable receiving love (and my desire to garden even though I kill everything I plant).” MUNA is currently on tour and planning to drop their next full-length on June 24 via Saddest Factory Records.

A quick trip north to the East Bay uncovers our next band, Svvarms. Formed in 2019, Svvarms is Luke Baće and Dan Pirello, old friends who have been making music together for years. “We Were Wild” marks their third single—after “Oceans” and “Adaleena”—and the duo are working on a full-length offering to be released later this year.

Will Jay is no stranger to Monday Moods. We’ve been enamored with his smooth pop panache since he dropped Perfectionist back in 2020. “Body of Water” is his latest vibe, which he says was written for his partner. “I wanted to write a song that felt like the ocean, that she could listen to when she wasn’t near water. This is easily my favorite song I’ve ever written because it came from a place of pure love.”
