Emmy nominated actress Cait Fairbanks plays Tessa Porter on daytime drama The Young and the Restless. A singer/songwriter whose sexual identity waxed and waned throughout her first year on the show, Tessa’s only constant was a love affair with her acoustic guitar. Like many soap characters that play musicians on television, Fairbanks’ musical career is indeed a real thing.
Recording under the name Ginesse, Fairbanks composes guitar-based pop ballads that flirt with electronic rhythms, and just dropped the video for her third single, “The Inbetween.” Directed by Rick Craft and choreographed by Marguerite Derricks, the video is a one-shot take in the vein of the Ethan Hawke-directed video for Lisa Loeb’s “Stay,” albeit much more vibrant. According to Fairbanks, who grew up in Orange County, the song is an exploration of that critical in-between time when a relationship goes from “just friends” to “more than friends,” and whether or not that romantic matriculation is always the best decision.
“I’m a pretty cautious person overall so I don’t like taking that risk,” she says of the song. “When someone means so much to your life, is it worth it to see if there’s more? I’m not sure in every situation that it’s the right move.”
