If you’re a homeowner in Oxnard, you could be one of the lucky residents to receive a peach or avocado tree for your front yard at no charge. While your new greenery could certainly contribute to some incredible cobbler or guacamole, the initiative was actually aimed to combat a local issue.
According to VC Star, “The offer — on a first-come, first-served basis — is funded by a $276,000 grant from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection as part of its Urban and Community Forestry Program. The avocado and peach trees are meant to improve air quality and are geared for neighborhoods identified as being disproportionately affected by pollution. The parts of the city are identified using the state mapping tool CalEnviroScreen.
