A Superbloom Is Coming to the Desert … and We’re All About It

This is the second time in two years we could see this kind of color.

With a series of storms blanketing California with much needed rain through December and January, it looks like our deserts could get a splash of color come spring. If so, typically quiet places like Anza-Borrego Desert State Park may get an extra flux of visitors to enjoy the spectacle.

According to Los Angeles Magazine, “While a sprinkling of flowers bud every spring, it can be years between super blooms. The last was in 2017, but before that, there had not been one since 2008.

“’With the first drops of rain each winter our hopes soar for an epic bloom,’ outdoorsman and photographer Ernie Cowan wrote in an essay for the San Diego Union-Tribune. ‘Thankfully that is more often not the case. If every spring wildflower show was spectacular, it would become ho-hum and routine.’”
